MIAMI -- The pressures of federally mandated exams have pushed public schools here and in several other states to begin classes weeks earlier than usual to squeeze in more days of instruction before the critical tests, sometimes striking August entirely from vacation calendars and devoting the month, traditionally left open for childhood leisure, to class time.Last August Dave Barry sent his daughter to start kindergarten in Miami-Dade, Fla., schools on Aug. 8. Here is some of what he wrote three days before:
But a widespread backlash, led by disgruntled parents organized into loosely affiliated Save Our Summers groups across the country, is underway.
Legislators in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and Pennsylvania are weighing bills this year that would peg school start dates to Labor Day. North Carolina, Texas, Minnesota and Wisconsin passed similar measures in recent years.

A. Sometime around Sept. 1, when most of the United States of America has started school for many decades.
B. On Aug. 8 -- also known as ''smack dab in the middle of summer'' -- when the average Florida classroom is roughly the same temperature as a pizza oven.
If you answered ''A,'' you are correct. If you answered ''B,'' you are an official of Miami-Dade or Broward public schools. These officials have decided that our children need to start school on Monday, when children from normal places are vacationing with their families, or attending summer camp, or lying on the sofa picking their noses and playing video games, which is what God clearly intended early August to be used for.
Among the children who will be trudging into Miami-Dade schools on Monday is my 5-year-old daughter, who enters kindergarten this year. When my wife told me the date our daughter would start school, my fifth question was: "Why?"
(My first four questions, in order, were: ''Aug. 8?'' ''Did you say Aug. 8?'' ''You mean, like, the eighth day of AUGUST?'' "Are they INSANE??'')

I loved it. I do think the official of Miami-Dade or Broward public schools are insane. I think they forgot what it was like to be a lazy kid and enjoy your summers off. All they care about it making the grade to get the money from the state for their teachers and I do mean it goes to the teachers, not to the kids much needed bookes, computers and other supplies! What happen to summer school? Why not reopen summer school to all those who need to go or want to go. Why make these kids give up there summer because some higher up was picking his nose, hit his brain and came up with how can we make our kids hate school even more then they do now! Lets add more pressure to these kids! Let the kids be kids! God, You guys took away all the FUN classes from these kids all ready why not take there summers too, because of the fcat and testing before winter break! Why not make them start earlier so more and more will drop out.. Good Job! And you went to school for how many years? Reopen and offer summer school to all who wants to go! If you are in it for the kids then you will see that making them start earlier so they can test a wk before winter break is really insane! These kids are not thinking of testing a wk before, they are chatting and make plans with there friends for the time they are off. So if you think this will bring up there test scores you are insane, and need to get out of the sun, your brain is over done! leave the kids alone and start school like everyother school in the USA, well most of them in Sept!
